Actress Cha Joo Young recently shared the surprising story of how she landed her role in The Glory, revealing that her long and exhausting audition process pushed her to the very edge. She got so frustrated that she accidentally cursed when answering the director’s questions!

During her appearance on the most recent episode of tvN‘s popular variety show You Quiz on the Block, Cha opened up about her journey, describing how she persevered through nearly two months of weekly auditions. She said she went through auditions every week for that time period.
The audition process was quite long. From what I remember, I auditioned almost every week for nearly two months.I kept reading the same script, and at one point, I thought, ‘Why aren’t they eliminating me already?’

Cha recalled that each audition felt more like a test to see how else she could bring the character of Hye Jeong to life. However, the constant uncertainty began taking its toll, leading to a shocking moment that would change everything.
One day, I reached my limit. The director asked, ‘Joo Young, how have you been?’ and in that moment, I thought, ‘How do you think I’ve been?!’ So, I just blurted out, ‘Like sh*t.’

To her surprise, the production team was captivated by her raw, authentic response. Looking back, Cha realized this unguarded moment may have been the key to landing the role.
I ended up blurting profanity in my response, but the production team absolutely loved it. Turns out that’s exactly what the character needed.

MC Yoo Jae Suk then pointed out that Lim Ji Yeon — who played Yeon Jin in The Glory — had a similar experience. Lim had previously shared that when asked to describe her character, she boldly responded with a curse word… and ended up securing the role.
The director asked me what kind of person I thought Yeon Jin was. I wondered, ‘How can I express my charm?’ And I just said, ‘Isn’t she basically a total b**ch?’ and I got the part.
— Lim Ji Yeon

Laughing at the coincidence, Cha agreed that the director seemed to appreciate raw, unfiltered energy during auditions. Following the success of The Glory, Cha Joo Young has continued to impress audiences with her performance in TVING and tvN’s The Queen Who Crowns. Her latest project, however, is now facing a major controversy. You can read more about it below.
