As investigations continue to figure out what went wrong with Jeju Air flight 2216 which took 179 lives, flyers onboard South Korean airlines remain vigilant for signs of aircraft malfunction. Such vigilance paid off on January 25, 2025 at 12:25 AM, Thailand local time.
Asiana Airlines flight OZ766 was scheduled to depart from Chiang Mai International Airport in Thailand and arrive at Incheon International Airport. However, after passengers reported seeing “sparks near the engine” during pre-takeoff preparations on the runway, the flight was immediately canceled.
The airline company responded to the situation by safely getting 270 passengers off the affected aircraft and placing them in hotels. A replacement flight was scheduled for 4:55 PM later the same day.
An Asiana Airlines official stated, “We are currently addressing the extent of the engine malfunction, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to our passengers.”
Meanwhile, the former head of the Korea Airports Corp—who was in charge during the renovation of an instrument landing system localizer at the Muan International Airport—was found dead.
