Girls’ Generation member Sooyoung recently appeared on a YouTube talk show hosted by Super Junior’s Donghae and Eunhyuk on the channel called DNE Comment, Hey Come here.
While discussing their shared experiences as trainees under SM Entertainment, the three idols started talking about the fixed positions in group choreographies, a practice that is less strictly followed these days for idol groups. Eunhyuk recalled being suddenly removed from the center position to the edge during a choreography session, confessing that the experience was initially upsetting for him.
The singer, however, admitted that after reviewing their performance, he realized that Siwon carried the choreography as the center in a way that he could not. He humorously submitted, “Their judgment was spot on!”
Sooyoung, too, recalled that for Girls’ Generations’ choreographies, Yoona, Yuri, and Seohyun often took the center spots, but initially, she didn’t think much of it.
“As we kept on promoting,” Sooyoung then explained, “I wondered if I could get a chance too,” talking about how it did end up disappointing her down the lane.
Talking specifically about their group’s hit song, “Genie,” Sooyoung joked, “I also have legs, so I wondered why I wasn’t given the opportunity.”
Sooyoung took a humorous dig at the executives’ decision to have the same member in the center, saying, “Everyone knows Yoona is beautiful. Who doesn’t know it?” adding, “I thought, couldn’t I get a little more screen time, like 3 seconds?“
But now, looking back, Sooyoung admits that the executives’ decision to have specific members as centers was an “unrivaled” strategy.
