Two finals competitions and three medals later, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team is only getting started at the 2024 Olympics.
Up next: Event finals. To kick off the proceedings, Simone Biles and Jade Carey will compete on vault as two of eight athletes going for gold on the event. Biles won the title in 2016, but the Team USA gymnasts will have to go up against the reigning Olympic champion in Rebeca Andrade.
That shouldn’t be a problem for Biles, who outscored the Brazilian in qualifications and in the individual all-around.
The winner could come down to the skill Biles chooses to perform. She can go for the Yurchenko double pike, also known as the Biles II, which has a difficulty score of 6.400. If she lands it cleanly, the vault title is hers.
Andrade performs the Cheng, which has a lower difficulty score of 5.600, meaning her execution must be nearly perfect to catch up to Biles. But if anyone could do it, it’s Andrade.
Carey is within striking distance, finishing third on vault in qualifications, just 0.25 points behind Andrade — all while recovering from illness. The reigning Olympic floor champion, who won’t be able to defend her title, would love nothing more than going home with a second medal, and she has the ability to do so.
The beginning of the end of 2024 Olympic gymnastics is here, but not without a little more action.

All times Eastern.
10:53 a.m. – Simone Biles, the gymnast you are! She has just a hop on the Yurchenko double pike for her best showing in competition yet. It earns a 15.700. Her Cheng has an even smaller bounce out of the landing. Her score averages out to a 15.300, and that’s going to be difficult for anyone to beat.

10:42 a.m. – Beautiful start for An! She sticks her first vault, the Yurchenko double full. She pikes down her second vault, but still puts up a decent score. An averages to a 14.216 to put her ahead of Georgieva.
10:40 a.m. – Bulgaria’s Georgieva is up first. Only a small hop on her second vault but otherwise a smooth landing. Her score averages out to a 13.983.

10:08 a.m. – With the men’s floor final wrapping up, only 10 minutes remain until the women get underway in Paris.
9:35 a.m. – Prior to the Games, Andrade submitted the Triple-Twisting Yurchenko to potentially get it named after her. She didn’t do the skill during warmups but could still go for it, knowing she’ll need the extra difficulty to beat Biles. Andrade needs to land it successfully for it to become an eponymous skill.
9:10 a.m. – Here’s the lineup for vault finals. Biles will vault fourth while Carey anchors the competition.
Here’s the start list for the women’s vault final, which will happen at approximately 4:20 p.m. local time/10:20 am. Eastern.
With Biles going before Andrade, it gives Rebe the chance to see what Simone does and if she needs to upgrade to try to challenge her.
