In the most closely contested group at Euro 2024, third-placed Slovakia will face off against leaders Romania in both sides’ final Group E encounter on Wednesday at Deutsche Bank Park.
No group is as finely poised as this one, where each team has won one and lost one game after the opening two rounds. It could come down to goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head record and maybe even fair play could play a role in the group finale.
Romania, who hold the narrow advantage heading into this round of fixtures, were beaten 2-0 by Belgium last time out, although they created enough chances to have taken a point which would have been enough to seal passage to the knockouts.
Slovakia, meanwhile, couldn’t build on their upset of Belgium with another win on Sunday, as they lost 2-1 to Ukraine.

Slovakia vs. Romania lineups & team news
Slovakia have no fresh injury concerns to deal with heading into the game on Wednesday, and it would not be a shock if manager Francesco Calzona opts against making any changes to the team that lost to Ukraine, having named practically the same XI in both matches at Euro 2024.
Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is certain to start in between the sticks, with the defensive wall marshalled by skipper Milan Skriniar alongside centre-back partner Denis Vavro.
Napoli playmaker Stanislav Lobotka will most likely be partnered by Ondrej Duda and Juraj Kucka in midfield, with Lukas Haraslin and Ivan Schranz supporting striker Robert Bozenik.
Slovakia starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Dubravka (GK) — Pekarik, Vavro, Skriniar, Hancko — Kucka, Lobotka, Duda — Schranz, Bozeník, Haraslin.
Romania introduced Valentin Mihaila into their starting XI last time out against Belgium on Saturday, with Florinel Coman making way.
And although Mihaila was subbed off against Belgium for Ianis Hagi, he should start again on Wednesday. Goalkeeper Florin Nita will be protected by the centre-back pairing of Radu Dragusin and Andrei Burca.
In midfield, Marius Marin will likely be partnered by Razvan Marin and Nicolae Stanciu, while Denis Dragus should spearhead the attack.
Veteran striker Denis Alibec, who returned from injury against Belgium, may feature off the bench in this game.
Romania starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Nita (GK) — Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, Bancu — R Marin, M Marin, Stanciu — Man, Dragus, Mihaila.
Slovakia vs. Romania prediction
- Score prediction: Slovakia 1-2 Romania
This should be an exciting rollercoaster of a group finale given that all four teams in Group E have a solid chance to qualify for the round of 16.
This game between two evenly-matched sides, in particular, is difficult to predict. Romania have produced the better displays so far, and Slovakia may struggle to break down their resilient opponents.
With that in mind, TSN predicts Romania to continue their impressive tournament by reaching the last-16 with a narrow 2-1 victory here.
