As the NFL season enters its second half, the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders are headed in opposite directions.
The Broncos have had a strong first few months of the year, totaling a 7-2 record that’s tied for the best mark in the NFL. That puts Denver in first place in the AFC West as the team tries to unseat the Kansas City Chiefs for the division crown.
The biggest reason the Broncos have won seven games this season is their fourth-quarter play. Second-year quarterback Bo Nix has been up and down this year, but his best moments have consistently come late in games, leading Denver to wins in four of its last five. However, the Broncos’ defense is the true star of the team, as the unit has allowed more than 30 points just once this season.
Meanwhile, the Raiders’ season could not have started worse, with a 2-6 record. Entering the year, Las Vegas expected a big jump thanks to the additions of head coach Pete Carroll and quarterback Geno Smith, two figures who made the playoffs together with the Seattle Seahawks.
However, Smith has had a tough season, as the 35-year-old is currently tied for the league lead in interceptions with 11. Carroll’s influence also hasn’t played out as the Raiders hoped, since the team has lost four of its six games by at least two scores.
The Raiders appear headed for another last-place finish in the AFC West, which will lead to more questions about the future of the club, while Denver could win the division for the first time since 2015 — the same year the team last won the Super Bowl.

Second quarter
9:18 p.m. — Smith missed Tucker on first down, and the Raiders got flagged for illegal touching. Las Vegas tried to get cute with a Bowers end around, but he lost four yards on the play. On third and 14, Smith hit Mayer for a nine-yard pick up. The Raiders lined up to go for it, but Smith got sacked for a turnover on downs.
9:14 p.m. — Nix begins the drive finding Dobbins for a seven-yard gain. He then hits Franklin for a gain of two. Nix scrambles to his left on third down and tries to hit tight end Evan Engram downfield, but misses him.
Denver is still searching for its first first down of the night.
9:09 p.m. — Jeanty picked up one yard on first down. Smith hung Mayer out to dry, and he got obliterated by a defender, unable to hold onto the check-down. Smith finally gets on the same page with Bowers, as the tight end picks up 31.

The Raider QB then threw one left on a swing pass to Jeanty, but it fell incomplete. Smith then sends a wide receiver screen pass to the right, but Tucker only picked up three yards.
Smith aired the ball out to Tucker, but it fell incomplete. Denver was flagged for offsides, and it became third and two instead of third and seven. Smith went to sneak the ball up the middle, but made no progress.
Las Vegas decided to go for it on fourth down. Smith found Tucker for a 31-yard score, but an offensive pass interference call nullified it. The Raiders decided to punt.

9:01 p.m. — Las Vegas punter A.J. Cole fumbled the snap, but was able to recover it and still get his punt off. Nix hit rookie running back RJ Harvey for a one-yard gain, but a holding penalty put them back 10 yards on the play. Harvey then picked up four yards on first down, before Nix missed Courtland Sutton on second down. On third and 16, Nix hit Troy Franklin for 13 yards, but the momentum brought Franklin short of the first down.
Denver lined up to go for it on fourth and three. They ended up taking the delay of game penalty after Las Vegas didn’t jump offside.
8:53 p.m. — After the break, Smith looks for Brock Bowers, but missed him for the second time in the game. On third-and-12, Smith was sacked for a loss of six. Las Vegas has to punt.
First quarter
8:49 p.m. — Jeanty started the next drive off with a carry up the middle for 10 yards. He then took a pass from Smith six yards. Jeanty almost had a gain of 32, but it was called back due to holding and it brought up the end of the first quarter.
8:43 p.m. — Quarterback Bo Nix attempted his first pass of the night for a gain of six yards. The Raiders defense got the yards right back by sacking him for a loss of nine yards. He then missed Evan Engram on third down and the Broncos had back-to-back three-and-outs to begin the game.
TOUCHDOWN — Raiders 7, Broncos 0
8:36 p.m. — Jeanty started the drive with a carry for no gain. Smith swung a pass to the right to Raheem Mostert who picked up 11 yards and moved the chains.
Tre Tucker then had an end around where he picked up seven. Smith then found backup tight end Michael Mayer for 11 yards to get into the redzone. Jeanty picked up six, and then Mayer had a nice one-handed grab, but picked up only two yards. Jeanty then punched it in from six yards out.

8:31 p.m. — The Broncos have their work cut out for them and have to go the length of the field after the Las Vegas punter landed the punt at the 1-yard line. J.K. Dobbins begins the drive with a six-yard rush up the middle. He then takes the next carry two yards, and a third consecutive carry for one yard.
The wind is whipping, which could be why the Broncos chose to keep the ball on the ground, but it resulted in a three-and-out.

8:25 p.m. — Denver won the coin toss and elected to defer. Las Vegas’ first play of the game was a run by Ashton Jeanty for no gain. Smith’s first pass in the post-Meyers era was to Dont’e Thornton for a gain of four. He then hit Tyler Lockett for a gain of six.
Seattle’s offensive plan on the first drive has been to chip away yardage. Jeanty picked up five yards on a carry, and then quarterback Geno Smith picked up six on a rush of his own. Another Jeanty gain of five, and a Lockett gain of nine were the last plays of the drive. The Raiders had a false start and Smith was sacked for a nine-yard loss before Las Vegas punted.

8:01 p.m. — We are about 15 minutes from kickoff. This matchup looks bad on paper, but it is an important AFC West divisional matchup. The Broncos have a chance for the best record in the NFL with a win, and the Raiders can look to pull off a big upset.
Another storyline to watch in the game is the Las Vegas passing attack. This will be the first game since Jakobi Meyers was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars at the NFL trade deadline.
7:55 p.m. — The Raiders will be wearing silver helmets and pants, but rather than their classic black jerseys, will be rocking white jerseys on the road in Denver.
