They reached the semifinals of Europe’s top competition last season, where their gut-wrenching defeat to Inter Milan felt more disappointing than anything.
Mallorca finished 10th in La Liga last season, doing so with one of the best defensive records in the league, but they struggled to put the ball in the net and will want to improve their offensive threat.

45 mins to kickoff: It’s a big call from Hansi Flick to start Eric Garcia over Jules Kounde at right-back, and one that comes with plenty of questions. Kounde suffered a season-ending muscle injury in the late stages of last season, and that injury is a big reason why Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League in the semifinals. Garcia had big moments, but overall was poor in the role.
According to reports in Spain, however, Flick feels that Garcia is “more suitable for the role,” which makes little sense when looking at last season. Couple this with the decision to force Marc-Andre ter Stegen out of the side, and Flick appears to be gambling on a couple of important decisions that could change the course of Barcelona’s season.

1 hour to kickoff: Thanks to their continued financial difficulties, Barcelona have are lacking bench options for today’s match. Getting new signings Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia registered for competition was tough enough, but they have not been able to register three other players who signed new contracts this offseason.
Wojciech Szczesny is one player who has not seen his one-year deal processed, while Gerard Martin and Roony Bardghji have also not been registered. It leaves the club absurdly thin for today’s game, should anyone find themselves injured.
1 hour 15 mins to kick: Lineups are in, and there are two surprises for Barcelona. It’s a bit eye-opening that Fermin Lopez is given the nod over Dani Olmo at the No. 10 position to begin the year, while Jules Kounde is on the bench as Eric Garcia is preferred at right-back.

Mallorca’s summer business included a move to sign Pablo Torre from Barcelona and he’s in line to start against his former side.
Spain Under-21 international Mateo Joseph has also joined on loan from Leeds United, but key defender Pablo Maffeo is out with a hamstring issue.

Barcelona’s sole absentee is captain Ter Stegen with the Germany international at the centre of swirling controversy in Catalonia. After initially rejecting Barcelona’s request to send his post-surgery medical report to La Liga, the veteran goalkeeper relented, and the club reinstated his captaincy.
The fact Ter Stegen has now officially been ruled a long-term injury absentee means Garcia will be able to be registered thanks to the salary space freed up. The club also confirmed on Saturday that Rashford had also seen his registration confirmed, so both players will be in contention to face Mallorca.
A late call will be made on Robert Lewandowski‘s muscle injury, but it seems he is unlikely to play.
