Cooper Rush signing with the Ravens on Sunday means the Cowboys are more likely to draft a QB in the first round of the draft – likely Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders or Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart since Miami’s Cam Ward.
“Prescott and journeyman Will Grier are now the only quarterback on the Cowboys’ roster after Rush’s departure and with Lance remaining a free agent. This now increases the odds Dallas uses one of its 10 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft on a quarterback to develop behind and to back up Prescott, who will be 32 years old at the start of the 2025 season,” CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell relayed.
The New York Post’s Bryan Fonseca agreed with the sentiment.
“With Will Grier as the only backup, the Cowboys face a pressing need to bolster their quarterback room following a tumultuous season that saw Prescott’s 2024 end prematurely due to a hamstring injury, though he’s expected to be ready for this coming campaign,” Fonseca wrote.
“The 2025 NFL Draft presents an opportunity for Dallas to address the quarterback room, and potentially their future at the position even as Prescott, 32 in July, has guaranteed money on his deal that runs through 2028.”
The Cowboys could pursue late-round options like Syracuse’s Kyle McCord and Louisville’s Tyler Shough if they opt to pursue an elite pass-rusher like Shemar Stewart, which has been floated.
The backup QB free agent market has dramatically dried at the position. The draft could be Dallas’ pathway to building their QB room behind Dak Prescott.
