The Mike Woodson era is coming to an end at the conclusion of this season. The news first broke in early February, following a rough stretch for the Hoosier team. Woodson was hired to turn around the complex dynamics of the program, and some might argue that he has succeeded by taking Indiana to the NCAA Tournament two out of the last three seasons.
However, for reasons unknown, Indiana has decided to part ways with Woodson after their final game this season. Many assume this decision stems from the team’s poor performance and the basketball world writing them off. Yet, the Hoosiers still have a legitimate shot at making the tournament.
On Sunday, Indiana hosted their rival Purdue for a Big Ten showdown. After a heartbreaking loss in their previous matchup, the Hoosiers were determined to get their revenge. They did just that, defeating the Boilermakers comfortably, 73-58.
Since the news of Woodson’s departure broke, the media has asked each visiting head coach for their thoughts on who should take over the position. Matt Painter’s response shocked many.
“They jump on and off things way too much here. Support your team. Support your coach. Quit overdoing s***,” Painter told the media. “I think they need to learn some of those things. Support Scott Dolson, support the new coach, support the staff, but also kind of be grounded with everything.”
Painter’s answer suggests that Indiana’s fanbase may be a key reason Woodson is being let go. Essentially, the fans’ frustrations have left the administration with no choice but to part ways with the fourth-year head coach.
Woodson and his staff are doing everything they can to set the Hoosiers up for a deep tournament run. If Woodson leads his team far into March, Indiana may find themselves reconsidering his departure and wanting him back at the helm next season, despite pushing him out.
