Former T-ARA member Ahreum is pushing back against recent legal troubles and filed an appeal last week after a court decision found her guilty of both child abuse and defamation charges.
StarNews reports that Ahreum is contesting her suspended prison sentence.
The Suwon District Court’s Ansan branch initially handed down a suspended sentence of eight months with two years of probation. The charges stemmed from incidents involving her ex-spouse and their children, where she allegedly used inappropriate language in front of her sons. Additionally, she faced accusations of damaging someone’s reputation during an online broadcast, where she made controversial statements about an individual who had shared legal documents concerning her current partner.
During the initial proceedings, the court noted that while Ahreum acknowledged her actions regarding the child abuse charges, the situation caused significant distress to the children’s legal guardian. On the defamation matter, though Ahreum claimed no intentional wrongdoing, the court found that her failure to verify information before making public statements demonstrated at least some level of deliberate intent.
The court’s decision took into account various factors, including Ahreum’s clean criminal record and her admission of wrongdoing in the child abuse case. The verdict also included a mandatory 40-hour educational program focused on preventing child abuse.
In a related judgment, Ahreum’s mother also received a suspended sentence for her involvement in the child abuse case.
