No. 1 Texas handled the pressure and intensity of the Red River Rivalry with poise last week, making quick work of Oklahoma. Are the Longhorns prepared to handle a tougher challenge against one of the nation’s best?
Saturday’s matchup with No. 5 Georgia is the crown jewel of Texas’ first SEC schedule, as the Bulldogs have more national championships than regular season losses since 2021 and are hungry to prove themselves after a ferocious comeback against Alabama three weeks ago came up painfully short.
Georgia didn’t exactly look the part against lowly Mississippi State last weekend, allowing 31 points, but perhaps Kirby Smart’s team was looking ahead to the consequential battle with the Longhorns. Two losses wouldn’t be enough to firmly knock the Bulldogs out of the College Football Playoff, but it would leave Georgia feeling much less certain and damage their chances of starting the playoff at home, let alone winning the SEC.
Texas has a one-game cushion over the rest of the SEC, but a slip-up against Georgia could leave the Longhorns scrambling to avoid an upset over the final five weeks. A win, however, would put Texas in terrific position to play for the SEC championship in December.
