Los Angeles Chargers being connected to multiple cornerbacks in trade deadline discussions

The NFL trade deadline is still nearly three weeks away but teams around the league are already making deals. Already this week, Davante Adams, Amari Cooper and Cam Akers have changed teams. More deals are sure to come.

The Los Angeles Chargers could be one of the teams looking to make a move and become a “buyer” ahead of the deadline and as many analysts surmise, the team could use more depth at cornerback. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox is of that mindset as has been writing a weekly trade deadline big board.

In his most recent offering, Knox connects the Chargers to two cornerbacks who could be available… Jonathan Jones of the New England Patriots and Greg Newsome II of the Cleveland Browns.

Jones went undrafted in 2016 but is now in his ninth year in the league, all with the Patriots. He comes from a championship organization as he was part of two Super Bowl-winning teams. But the Patriots are clearly in rebuild mode and moving on from the 31-year-old, who should still have plenty of productivity left in his career, could be the best move for both sides.

Newsome is an even more intriguing prospect. A first-round pick in 2021, Newsome is one of the better cover corners in all of football and is only 24 years old. The Browns would like to keep him, but the Deshaun Watson contract is likely to further destroy the team and the Browns are going to have to get out from under some contracts in order to absorb the blow.

Moving on from Newsome would save the team $ 13.4 million against the salary cap for next season, so it’s a move that would make sense for both sides.

The Chargers have a decent cornerback room, but they recently placed Asante Samuel Jr. on injured reserve and could use a reinforcement in Jim Harbaugh’s stingy defense.

First-year general manager Joe Hortiz has been willing to make moves already, trading for Elijah Molden and Taylor Heinicke after the preseason concluded. He will likely survey the market closely before the November 5 deadline and Jones and Newsome are two players he could definitely have on his radar.
