The Denver Broncos are slowly starting to put it together on offense, but the tight end position is a spot that sticks out like a sore thumb, and not in a good way.
Bo Nix is coming off his best game as a pro last week against the Las Vegas Raiders and he’s looking to build upon that performance. The team could help its quarterback by getting a tight end that opens up the passing game.
The Broncos have gotten very little from their tight ends this season. Through five games, only nine passes have been caught by tight ends. That number has to improve.
Last week, the team placed Greg Dulcich on the inactive list. Is that the end of the line for Dulcich in Denver? It definitely could be, and at the very least it’s a demotion. Lucas Krull played in his place but he still has plenty of room to grow as a player.
Will the Broncos look to acquire a tight end before the trade deadline?
Broncos acquire New England Patriots tight end Austin Hooper in trade idea
Recently, Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports put together one move that every team should make before the trade deadline, which is set for November 5.
He has the Broncos trading for Patriots tight end Austin Hooper. While this would not be an earth-shattering move, it would give the Broncos a veteran option who has been a solid contributor before.
Hooper was a third-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 2016. After four seasons there, he has had short stints with the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and now, the Patriots. He signed with New England this past spring and has caught seven passes for 77 yards and a touchdown this season.
However, for his career, Hooper has 371 career receptions for 3,779 yards and 26 touchdowns. He wouldn’t come into Denver and be a guy who stretches the field, but he would be a guy who is crafty enough to find pockets in the defense and get open to give Nix an option to throw to underneath.
Hooper wouldn’t cost more than a day three draft pick, so it’s a move Broncos fans could live with if it were to be made.
