The Texas A&M Aggies dismantled the No. 9-ranked Missouri Tigers. The SEC battle in the first slate of games didn’t provide much entertainment to the average college football fan, though Aggies fans can walk away from the game pleased.
The storyline of the contest, outside of Texas A&M scoring 41 points in the lopsided win, was the return of quarterback Conner Weigman. Following the victory 41-10, Aggies head coach Mike Elko was passionate and emotional while defending the starting quarterback.
“You can challenge Conner for how he plays, and you can be upset with Conner for how he throws the football,” Elko said. “Some of the stuff that has been said about this kid and written about this kid… is embarrassing. Absolutely embarrassing, the stuff that gets out there on this kid.”
Weigman opened up the Aggies’ playbook. He completed 18 of his 22 passes for 276 passing yards, though he didn’t connect with any of his targets in the end zone. Still, the Texas A&M quarterback moved the chains and kept the offense afloat while the team’s rushing attack completed drives by scoring five touchdowns.
Elko claimed that those who were heavily critical of Weigman – almost to a personal level – need to take ownership in their work.
“This kid’s a winner. He’s a competitor,” Elko said. “He does everything that he needs to do for Texas A&M football, and there’s a lot of people right now that need to stand up and recognize what they’ve said over the last three weeks and take some… ownership over it.”
No. 25-ranked Texas A&M will almost certainly see a solid boost in the coming AP Poll as they absolutely blew out a top-ten program.
