Real Madrid continue their UEFA Champions League defence with a trip to face Ligue 1 side Lille on Wednesday.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side were pushed hard by Stuttgart in their league phase opener but eventually ran out 3-1 winners.
Lille were beaten 2-0 by Sporting CP and will aim to kickstart their campaign by claiming the scalp of the 15-time winners, who have France hero Kylian Mbappe on the bench as he builds his way back to full fitness.
If he comes on, it will be Mbappe’s first club appearance in his homeland since leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.

Lille vs. Real Madrid live updates, highlights, and commentary
19 mins: Brilliant solo run from Endrick. Lille turnover possession in their own half and Vinicius cleverly opens up room for his younger compatriot. Endrick shows electric pace and flawless close control to condemn Lille defenders to his slipstream before shooting at Chevalier.
18 mins: Another Lille attack featuring a couple more Santos deliveries, the first again towards David before the latter curls kindly into Lunin’s gloves.
17 mins: Lille have played tidily here and have a clearly drilled plan. Santos charges forward from right wing-back to launch first-time cross towards David, who controls on his chest but can’t bring the ball under his spell.
16 mins: Bellingham, still looking for his first goal of the season, takes aim for the top corner from the edge of the box and shoots over. Alexsandro hurled himself bravely into the line of fire there.
11 mins: Carvajal slots a teasing ball towards the Lille box. Diakite reads Endrick’s run but trips over the youngster and collides with goalkeeper Chevalier. A painful-looking one of the centre-back but he seems ready to continue.
6 mins: Vinicius cuts inside and fires goalwards. Chevalier gets down well and holds onto the ball despite the greasy surface.
5 mins: A poor clearance from Alexsandro falls straight to Camavinga but Madrid elect to calmly keep possession an build rather than going for the throat. Quietening this effervescent crowd in the name of the game; offering David et al the chance to break at speed is not.
Kickoff: 1st Half
We’re underway, amid a fog of firework smoke.
3 mins before kickoff: Here are the players. The home fans roar at the crescendo of the competition anthem. The locals are bang up for this.
20 mins before kickoff: By contrast, Lille’s 3-0 win at La Havre on Saturday was their first victory in five outings, the preceding 3-3 draw against Strasbourg having snapped a run of four-straight defeats that ended with their 2-0 defeat at Sporting CP. Any result to get Bruno Genesio’s men on the board tonight would be raucously celebrated.
40 mins before kickoff: After a slightly stuttering start to the season in LaLiga, Madrid have trimmed Barcelona’s lead at the summit to three points and their weekend draw across town at Atletico Madrid ended a five-game winning run across all competitions, including their opening 3-1 Champions League triumph over Stuttgart. Ancelotti’s men appear to be warming to their task nicely despite an at times notable injury list.
1 hour before kickoff: The Lille team is more or less as you’d expect, with the bulk of the attacking burden falling on Jonathan David. The Canada forward was recently linked to Barcelona so has an obviously opportunity to land himself on the front pages of Sport and Mundo Deportivo on Thursday morning.
1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: The Real Madrid team is in early, as is Ancelotti’s wont. Kylian Mbappe is only on the bench as he builds his way back to full fitness. His brother Ethan is out of this one for Lille too. The harsh realities of a packed European calendar care not for your narratives. Endrick makes his first start in attack for Madrid. The Brazilian teenager has two goals across eight substitute appearances so far, which total 50 minutes on the field.

Lille vs. Real Madrid lineups, team news
The big news for Lille is that Ethan Mbappe, brother of Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe, has failed to recover from a thigh injury and will miss out on facing his sibling.
The goal-scoring burden will again fall on Canada star Jonathan David, who has this week been linked with Barcelona and may relish the chance to do damage against their La Liga rivals.
England midfielder Angel Gomes is suspended after his red card against Sporting CP, so the experienced Remy Cabella comes into a packed midfield
Lille predicted XI (5-4-1, right to left): Chevalier (GK) — Santos, Diakite, Alexsandro, Gudmundson, Bakker — Zhegrova, Andre, Cabella, Bouaddi— David
Injured: Haraldsson, Ismaily, E. Mbappe, Mukau
Suspended: Gomes

Kylian Mbappe is in the matchday squad for this game but Carlo Ancelotti has decided to start him on the bench to avoid rushing him back from injury. That could see Jude Bellingham deployed in more of the false 9 role he played last season, while Endrick makes a keenly anticipated maiden Madrid start.
Andriy Lunin starts in goal after Thibaut Courtois suffered an abductor injury. Aurelien Tchouameni keeps his place in midfield despite a shaky performance in the 1-1 draw with rivals Atletico Madrid last weekend.
Real Madrid (4-3-3, right to left): Lunin (GK) — Carvajal, Rudiger, Militao, Mendy — Valverde, Tchouameni, Camavinga — Endrick, Bellingham, Vinicius
Injured: Alaba, Brahim Diaz, Ceballos, Courtois (doubt),
Suspended: None
