The New York Giants are trending in the wrong direction a month into the season, which means they could be looking to ship off some assets before the trade deadline.
One team that could be calling is the Kansas City Chiefs, who now have to deal with a potential season-ending knee injury to star wide receiver Rashee Rice.
As the Giants offense focuses on getting the ball to rookie sensations Malik Nabers as well as Wan’Dale Robinson, they could be in the market to trade away Darius Slayton.
That was one suggestion made by Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News, who put together a list of potential trade candidate the Chiefs could target.
“The Giants have Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt to help rookie first-rounder Malk Nabers. Slayton is an experienced target who can cross over well into Reid’s offense after working with former Chiefs assistant Mike Kafka in New York,” Iyer wrote.
Slayton has long been a topic of trade proposals dating back to the offseason. While he reworked his contract, the Giants are approaching a point in which they may need to trade away certain assets that don’t fit into the future plans.
Slayton has been a productive player for the Giants in recent seasons, but his usage has plummeted to just 10 receptions for 122 yards on 15 targets through the first four games.
While Rice and Slayton play different roles on offense, the Chiefs simply need more production from the room considering the depth chart.
If the Chiefs come calling with a decent draft pick for a player unlikely to be in the future plans, the Giants may need to heavily consider it.
