The age-old cliché is that you learn more from defeat than you do from victory. Mexican super middleweight star Jaime Munguia will be hoping that’s the case when he takes on the undefeated Erik Bazinyan on Friday, September 20 at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) is coming off a convincing 12-round unanimous decision loss to countryman and boxing legend Canelo Alvarez. The 27-year-old Munguia acquitted himself well, but he was decked in the fourth round and absorbed a lot of punishment in the fight.
“We’ve had great fights against great fighters. We’ve been on great stages as well. That has helped us to get a lot of confidence,” said Munguia at the final press conference. “We learn more with each camp and will apply all the experience we have learned.
“[Bazinyan is] a very important fight. He’s an aggressive fighter who gives a great show to the people. I know it’s going to be a tough fight, but I’m going to walk away with my hand raised.”
Bazinyan is an extremely audacious choice of opponent for Munguia. The 29-year-old Canadian is tall and rangy with a good punch and he’s stayed active. Currently rated No. 7 by The Ring, Bazinyan is coming off a 10-round draw with Shakeel Phinn. Before that, he’d won 32 straight fights over 11 years.
“We are very well prepared,” Bazinyan said. “We have a great game plan and had a great training camp with Marc [Ramsay]. We have done everything possible to win.
“It’s the right time for this fight. I have been ready for the past couple of years. When I get an opportunity like this, I take it. So, it’s time to let the world know who I am.”
The Sporting News will provide undercard results and a full report on the main event.
