One of sport’s greatest rivalries is set to be rekindled in 2024. It’s only right that such a feast would take place in Sin City, a place where gluttony finds company.
Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi are luminaries in the world of competitive eating, having racked up 22 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest crowns between them. That’s not to mention the dozens of other competitions in which they have vanquished opponents, from tacos, deep-fried asparagus and boysenberry pie (Chestnut) to rice balls and cow brains (Kobayashi.)
All of that is to say, Chestnut and Kobayashi are to competitive eating what Magic and Bird were to basketball, what Borg and McEnroe were to tennis, what Didion and Babitz were to cultural criticism. That is to say, they elevate one another in a way few others could. Whenever they clash with one another, sparks tend to fly. So too does the harrowing aroma of meat sweats, but that’s an entirely different story.
Chestnut and Kobayashi are the flag bearers for competitive eating as we know it. And the sport’s two greatest luminaries are returning to the spotlight to face each other one last time, this time in Las Vegas.
Chestnut and Kobayashi will duel in a battle of gullets. Their substance of choice? None other than hot dogs, the food that brought them to the world’s attention in the first place.
