Japanese actress Hirosue Ryoko has apologized for her previous affair.
In June 2023, Hirosue Ryoko, known as the “Nation’s Daughter,” was exposed for having an affair with celebrity chef Toba Shusaku. After initially denying the affair, the actress admitted to it a week after the rumors began to circulate.
Both Toba and Hirosue were in relationships with others at the time. The following month, Hirosue announced her divorce from her husband, Izutsu Jun, with whom she has two children. Toba and Hirosue were spotted together after, and rumors have circulated that they will get married sometime in 2024.
The affair’s exposure damaged Hirosue’s image, and her then-company, FLamMe, placed her on hiatus. Since then, she has slowly returned, leaving the company earlier this year.
In her first interview since then with Bungei Shunju, Hirosue apologized for the “trouble” she caused last year.
I wanted to apologize for the trouble and concern I caused to many people with last year’s incident. However, I found it difficult to respond to the media. So, I came here today with the hope that I could offer my apologies first. I’m truly sorry.

She shared that she “realized that moving forward and continuing my work while pretending nothing happened wouldn’t be the right thing to do,” seemingly hinting at her return to work.
Hirosue Ryoko made her television debut in 1995, and became known to audiences outside of Japan for her performance in Departures, which won the Academy Award for “Best Foreign Language Film” at the 2009 Academy Awards.
She her latest activities were a special event held on her birthday.
