After Day 1 of the Olympic men’s gymnastics qualification, the team final is set. China and Japan dominated the qualification round, taking the top two spots in team standings.
China’s Boheng Zhang also leads the the individual all-around qualifying, followed by Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka.
Team USA struggled on the first day of competition and are currently fifth in the team event.
The top eight teams move on to the team final, but the U.S. will have some ground to make up if they want to compete for a spot on the podium for the first time since 2008.
Frederick Richard earned the highest scores for Team USA, followed by Paul Juda. Brody Malone, the team’s only returning Olympian, struggled in his first events.
