The New York Giants officially returned to East Rutherford for training camp at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Wednesday.
With a mostly healthy roster outside of a handful of players, the Giants quickly got to work. Unlike last year, Brian Daboll got his team working immediately in team drills. They didn’t run any 7-on-7 drills, focusing solely on 11-on-11 drills.
Here are the biggest takeaways and notes from Day 1 of Giants training camp:
Takeaways from Day 1 of Giants training camp
Daniel Jones is full-go
After being limited to just 7-on-7 reps during the spring workouts, Jones took all of the first-team reps in team drills on Wednesday. He was fully cleared by the training staff for contact, which means he should be without limitations unless the team decides to ease him into a workload.
By most accounts, Jones certainly looked like he has some rust to shake off. According to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, Jones was “misfiring on several intermediate throws,” which is to be somewhat expected.
Regardless, it’s encouraging that Jones will have a shot at participating in a full schedule of training camp in what is a crucial year for both him and head coach Brian Daboll.
Injury report
PUP list: RT Evan Neal (ankle), TE Theo Johnson (hip), CB Aaron Robinson (knee)
NFI list: CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver (groin), S Jalen Mills (calf)
The Giants had a bit of a scare when veteran Jermaine Eluemunor exited with a rib injury during team drills. He later posted an update saying he’s fine, but it’s unclear how long he’ll be out. Eluemunor was working as the starting right tackle with Neal starting camp on the PUP list.
Linebacker Carter Coughlin left practice early with an undisclosed injury and didn’t return.
Isaiah Simmons finding a role
The former first-round pick has yet to find a steady role in any defense he’s played since entering the league in 2020, but the Giants seem to have a specific one in mind for Shane Bowen’s scheme. Simmons worked with the slot defenders during Wednesday’s practice, which is a peculiar note considering his 6-foot-4 and 238-pound frame.
Simmons won’t work as the nickel defender in every package, but he could be a viable asset against tight ends and bigger receivers in the slot. He worked mostly with the third-team defense.
Quick hits
- Head coach Brian Daboll was again calling plays for the offense.
- Before Eluemunor’s injury, the starting offensive line was LT Andrew Thomas, LG Aaron Stinnie, C John Michael Schmitz, RG Jon Runyan and RT Jermain Eluemunor. After leaving, the Giants move Josh Ezeudu to right tackle with the first team.
- With Cor’Dale Flott moving to the boundary, Nick McCloud was working with the first-team defense as the nickel.
- Dane Belton and Jason Pinnock were the starting safety tandem while rookie Tyler Nubin work exclusively with the second team.
The Giants are back on the field Thursday morning for Day 2 of training camp at 10:00 a.m. for a practice that is open to the fans.
