Recently, a Japanese netizen brought back an old video featuring BTS members, which has ignited some severe rift in the K-Pop fandom.
The video in question features BTS leader RM playfully singing a popular Korean song, “Dokdo Is Our Land.” Notably, the Dokdo Islands are a disputed territory between Korea and Japan, with both countries laying claims of sovereignty on the land.
The video was first posted by a right-wing Japanese netizen, who paired it with a derogatory caption, even designating the hanbok RM was wearing as “comfort women’s clothes.”
Shortly after, the video was reposted by a media outlet with almost the same caption, garnering huge attention.

International ARMYs took to social media to voice their objection against this blatant attack against BTS.

This Japanese argued that a white top&black skirt as “Japanese military sexual slavery costume.” BTW. It was a school uniform for Korean girls in the 1920s~50s. How horrible is the difference between two eyes on one history. https://t.co/6y8MRhx2YL

If you are a fan of any Korean woman and you think that this tweet is okay just because it drags an idol that you hate, let me tell you that you are stupid because these kinds of Japanese people have the ideology that Korean women are descendants of prostitutes https://t.co/ODC2WU1QNc

Meanwhile, Korean fans were deeply offended by the actions of some international fanbases of other K-Pop groups that seemed to deliberately spread the video with misleading captions.
- “The i-roaches have started again.”
- “Aren’t they embarrassed?”
- “I usually hate getting involved in any fight between international fandoms, but this needs to be called out publicly.”
- “Comfort women…Have they gone crazy?”
— “The historical distortion is driving me f*cking crazy, LOL.” - “They’re distorting our history. Are they all even sane?”
- “What’s the issue of these overseas fans?”
