England and Spain face their date with destiny in the final of Euro 2024 at Berlin’s historic Olympiastadion.
La Roja have been the form side of the competition, winning all six of their matches and playing wonderful football as the likes of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams have established themselves as breakout global stars.
By contrast, Gareth Southgate has guided a sometimes coughing and spluttering England to their second consecutive European final.
Ollie Watkins’ stunning last-minute winner against the Netherlands in the semifinals marked the first time since their tournament opener that the Three Lions have won inside 90 minutes in Germany. But a talent-stacked side might just be finding form and balance at the perfect time as they aim to end their soccer-mad nation’s agonising 58-year wait for a major honour.

England vs. Spain live updates, highlights from Euro 2024
1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: Confirmed team news will be with us shortly and there’s only really one talking point across two very settled sides. Luke Shaw has been tipped to make his first start of the tournament ahead of Kieran Trippier at left-wingback for England. The Manchester United player came into the competition nursing an injury but he has impressed by lending much-missed balance to the England side in extended substitute outings against Switzerland and the Netherlands. On the other hand, Shaw would be making his first start in any competitive football since February manning the same flank as Spain sensation Lamine Yamal. A gamble, for sure, but one worth taking with everything on the line.
1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: For the most recent major tournament meeting between England and Spain, you have to go all the way back to the quarterfinals of Euro 96. It’s a game that’s best remembered for Stuart Pearce slaying his 1990 World Cup demons when he scored in England’s shootout win after a tense 0-0 draw. Well, apart from in Spain. There the match is remembered as a robbery on account of Julio Salinas and Kiko having goals incorrectly ruled out and Alfonso Perez having a clear penalty shout against Paul Gascoigne waved away.
2 hours before kickoff: England won the previous competitive meeting between these sides when Southgate’s men claimed a swashbuckling 3-2 win in Seville. Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford were on target that night, two support attackers who suited Harry Kane’s natural game to a greater extent than the current configuration. The Bayern Munich star has looked short of form and fitness during this competition but his nerveless penalty against the Netherlands made him joint top scorer with three goals. Kane could walk away with another golden boot and the first major honour of his prolific career later and we’d all wonder what all the fuss was about.

2 hrs 20 mins before kickoff: England’s form in Germany could hardly contrast more sharply with that of their opponents tonight. After an impressive first half hour, the opening win over Serbia became a slog and they stayed in that mode for the next three games. Gareth Southgate’s team lacked balance, cutting edge and inspiration. They were seconds from going out until Jude Bellingham’s overhead kick deep into stoppage time forced an extra half-hour against Slovakia. That was the first of England’s showreel tournament moments. The second came when they scored five out of five penalties to defeat Switzerland in a shootout before Ollie Watkins’ winning goal for the ages in the semifinal against the Netherlands. “Moments” are a thing for media types to obsess over. Of greater concern to Spain will be the evidence seen that arguably versus Switzerland and definitely against the Netherlands that a talented England side have started to… whisper it… play quite well.
2 hrs 40 mins before kickoff: If Euro 2024 was a league competition, Spain would have run away with the title a couple of games ago. There’s no doubt whatsoever that Luis de la Fuente’s men have been the most impressive team in Germany. They have won all six of their matches. Only Brazil’s 2002 World Cup winners have claimed victory in every match of a seven-team international tournament before. From their opening 3-0 win over Croatia, to the dominant 1-0 triumph over Italy to dispatching high-quality foes in the form of Germany and France in the knockout rounds, La Roja have played with an authority that suggests they can start a run of success to compare with the three major titles won in a row by the country’s 2008-2012 vintage.

England vs. Spain lineups, team news, starting 11
Gareth Southgate has settled on a 3-4-2-1 system for England since the quarterfinal win over Switzerland, but he still has a couple of selection dilemmas to make for the final.
Left-footed full-back Luke Shaw, who scored the Three Lions’ only goal in the Euro 2020 final against Italy, will be vying for a start at left wing-back ahead of right-footed defender Kieran Trippier, having overcome an injury that he carried over to Germany. After coming off the bench in the last two games and replacing Trippier at half-time in Dortmund, the Manchester United defender is reportedly set to earn is first start of the tournament as Southgate tries to formulate a plan to restrict the dazzling Lamine Yamal on Spain’s right wing.
Calls for the energetic Ollie Watkins to start ahead of Harry Kane, who has struggled to make notable impact and cut a frustrated figure for much of the tournament despite getting on the scoresheet three times, will ramp up after Watkins scored the winner off the bench against the Netherlands. However, it’s likely that Southgate will bank on his best striker, leader and captain to come good when it matters the most.
There have been no reports of any fresh injury concerns throughout the semifinal, so England should be unchanged elsewhere.
England predicted lineup (3-4-2-1, right to left): Pickford (GK) — Walker, Stones, Guehi — Saka, Mainoo, Rice, Shaw — Foden, Bellingham — Kane.
England subs (max 15): Matchday squad released one hour prior to kickoff.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente will receive a double defensive boost for Sunday’s grand finale with centre-backs Robin Le Normand and Dani Carvajal both returning from respective one-match bans.
They are poised to slot straight back in place of Nacho Fernandez and 38-year-old Jesus Navas, the latter of whom had a tough time of things against the electrifying Kylian Mbappe last time out and went off with a knock in the second half.
Striker Alvaro Morata started against the French after reports that he too had collected his second yellow card of the tournament in the 2-1 extra-time victory over hosts Germany in the quarterfinals proved to be incorrect.
However, Spain have been handed a freak injury scare over their captain, who looked to hurt his knee when a security guard slipped and clashed with him during the post-match celebrations. Morata was wincing as he made his way off the pitch, raising doubts about his availability for Sunday’s final, but De la Fuente is hopeful that he will be fine to lead his side out of the tunnel in Berlin.
The Spain boss said in his post-match press conference: “Alvaro, we have to wait and see tomorrow. We believe it’s nothing. It hurts but we think it’s nothing.”
Otherwise De La Fuente should have a full-strength squad available at his disposal to pick starting XI from, with only Pedri missing with the knee injury he suffered against Germany. RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo replaced him against France and will certainly retain his place in midfield after bagging the winner against Les Bleus.
Spain predicted lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Simon (GK) — Carvajal, Le Normand, Laporte, Cucurella — Dani Olmo, Rodri, Fabian Ruiz — Lamine Yamal, Morata, Nico Williams.
Spain (max 15): Matchday squad released one hour prior to kickoff.
