England face Switzerland at Dusseldorf’s Merkur Spiel-Arena in the third of the Euro 2024 quarterfinals.
Gareth Southgate’s squad, despite facing criticism for their uneven performances, managed a dramatic comeback against Slovakia in the Round of 16 thanks in part to a stunning bicycle-kick goal from Jude Bellingham.
Meanwhile, Switzerland have been on an impressive run, defeating reigning champions Italy in the previous round with goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas. Murat Yakin’s team are on an eight-game unbeaten streak and have their sights set on breaking new ground by reaching their first major tournament semifinal.

England vs. Switzerland live updates, highlights, and commentary from Euro 2024
1 hour before kickoff: It’s as you’d expect from Switzerland, although Fabian Rieder gets the nod as an attacking option at right wingback despite Silvan Widmer returning from suspension.
1 hr 10 mins before kickoff: Here’s the England XI. Ezri Konsa in for the suspended Marc Guehi is the only change from the team that edged past Slovakia but it does look like that presumed change is shape will happen. If it does, it means Keiran Trippier and Bukayo Saka starting as the wing-backs. Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luke Shaw are on the bench and obvious wide alternatives in a 3-4-3.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: Confirmed team news will be with us shortly and speculation is rife that Gareth Southgate will revert to a back three in an attempt to give his under-achieving stars a spark. Southgate used this shape throughout England’s run to the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and reverted to it for the round-of-16 win over Germany and final defeat to Italy on penalties at Euro 2020. It would also have the possible advantage of matching up to Switzerland’s system, however Murat Yakin’s side look well-grooved to an extent it is hard to imagine England matching after a week on the training ground. Southgate’s hope will be to close that gap enough so that the likes of Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden have a platform to shine.
1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: So, yeah, England haven’t really played well at Euro 2024 yet. But maybe they’ve simply been ahead of the curve. Spain, the competition’s form team, were pretty fortunate to burgle an unforgettable last-minute win against hosts Germany yesterday, while Portugal and France were both borderline unwatchable before the latter prevailed on penalties. Playing well? Overrated in tournament football, apparently.
2 hours before kickoff: England haven’t yet impressed at Euro 2024, but this is the time to find form: they face an emboldened and competitive Switzerland side who have already put out holders Italy. Can they eliminate the other finalists of Euro 2020?

England vs. Switzerland lineups, team news
Centre-back Marc Guehi, who received a second yellow card of the tournament in the last-16 match against Slovakia, is suspended. Ezri Konsa replaces the Crystal Palace man in the only change in personnel from the team that started last weekend, although a switch to a three-man defence is anticipated.
That means Kieran Trippier and Bukayo Saka as wingbacks, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luke Shaw the alternatives out wide on the bench.
Jude Bellingham will start in midfield after his UEFA investigation into a celebration gesture against Slovakia saw him fined, and issued with only a suspended ban.
England starting lineup (3-4-2-1, right to left): Pickford (GK) — Walker, Stones, Konsa — Trippier, Mainoo, Rice, Saka — Foden, Bellingham — Kane.
England subs (max 15): Ramsdale (GK), Henderson (GK), Shaw, Alexander-Arnold, Dunk, Gallagher, Toney, Gordon, Watkins, Bowen, Eze, Gomez, Palmer, Wharton.
The match also sets up an intriguing midfield battle between Declan Rice of England and Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka, who is set to recover from a minor adductor scare.
Swiss coach Murat Yakin welcomes back Silvan Widmer from suspension, although Fabian Rieder gets the nod at right wingback.
Switzerland starting lineup (3-4-2-1): Sommer (GK) — Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez — Rieder, Xhaka, Freuler, Aebischer — Ndoye, Vargas — Embolo.
Switzerland subs (max 15): Mvogo (GK), Kobel (GK), Stergiou, Widmer, Elvedi, Zakaria, Okafor, Steffen, Zuber, Zesiger, Sierro, Duah, Shaqiri, Jashari, Amdouni.
