The Houston Texans selected C.J. Stroud with the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL draft and he quickly established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the AFC. Stroud accomplished more in a single season than some players do in an entire career, but don’t expect that early success to get to his head.
Even at 22 years old, Stroud is wise beyond his years. If you don’t believe us, just ask West Coast rap legend Snoop Dogg. Back in 2014, Stroud joined Snoop’s youth football league and left a lasting impression on his coaches.
10 years later, Snoop reflected on the leadership traits that Stroud showed as a 12-year-old during an interview with ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime:
“It’s special because [Stroud] is exactly what we breed kids to be… Good students, good athletes, respecting their elders, their parents and being a great listener. C.J. was a great listener. That’s why he’s translating on that football field into a great leader.”
While leadership is something that rookie quarterbacks tend to struggle with early in their careers, it came naturally to Stroud. Houston was expected to be among the worst teams in the NFL last season but the former Ohio State star led the Texans to an AFC South championship and wild-card victory.
Snoop clearly takes pride in Stroud’s success and says they still talk about football.
“I like to get information from him because he’s the future, So to be able to tap in with the youth and stay active. That’s a gift, and I love the fact that my football league has created that.”
Entering 2024, the expectations surrounding Stroud and the Texans are considerably higher than last year. However, the young QB has the right mindset to overcome whatever challenges await.
