BTS‘s mega-fandom ARMY is facing backlash.
On July 1, a post titled “Critic Kim Young Dae Deleted His NewJeans’ Japan Concert Review After Getting Attacked By Fans Of Another Group” went viral. In the post, the author uploaded a tweet by critic Kim Young Dae, praising NewJeans’ Japanese concert.
Min Hee Jin, through NewJeans, is reaching and achieving plateaus that K-Pop has long yearned for. She has achieved the epitome of modernity, where time and space become irrelevant but are shared and exist in everyone’s minds and emotions. NewJeans achieves absolute compatibility where it can be everything and anything at the same time. Her achievement is even more remarkable considering it wasn’t accomplished through any technology or system, but through sensible aesthetics in a way that everyone can understand.

According to the post, not everyone was happy with the critics’ praise for one of K-Pop’s most remarkable acts. The author then revealed disturbing comments sent by alleged ARMYs that have since made the critic take down his praise for NewJeans.
Korean netizens reacted in horror and criticized the alleged BTS fans for their comments.
- “Again?”
- “Do critics need to cater to them, too? Seriously, c’mon.”
- “Why are they doing that to Kim Young Dae?”
- “This isn’t even surprising anymore.”
- “I guess the toxicity of fandoms doesn’t discriminate nationalities…”
- “They are ruining BTS’s image. They should just like BTS, why are they also fans of HYBE when BTS’s relationship with HYBE is over the minute the group’s contract ends?”
- “Why are they doing that? I don’t think he said anything to attack them. I’m asking because I’m really curious.”
- “I am a fan of both BTS and NewJeans, and what I can’t understand is why international fans think HYBE = BTS. It’s so frustrating because I think a lot of international fans misunderstand this to be true when it isn’t.”
