Portugal and Turkey will seek to build on the momentum from their opening Euro 2024 wins when they meet in an intriguing Group F clash in Dortmund on Saturday.
Having crashed out in the group stage three years ago before failing to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Turkey played with the abandon of having nothing to lose as they beat fearless outsiders Georgia 3-1 and Mert Muldur and Arda Guler rattled home goal-of-the-tournament contenders.
Much more was expected of 2016 winners Portugal pre-tournament and they were made to sweat by Czechia, falling behind before substitute Francisco Conceicao pinched a 2-1 victory in stoppage time.
Cristiano Ronaldo could not find the target as he became the first player in history to feature in six editions of the European Championship. He is no longer the youngest player to score on his debut in the competition, though. That honor now belongs to Real Madrid teenager Guler.
The Sporting News is following Turkey vs. Portugal live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Turkey vs. Portugal live updates, highlights from Euro 2024
82 mins: We’ve got a second break in play here as another youngster tries their luck for a selfie with Ronaldo. It’s not been the best job from the pitch-side stewards. Meanwhile, Pepe goes off to a standing ovation from all four corners of this huge stadium as he goes off for Antonio Silva.
78 mins: Turkey make some inroads down the right, but Fernandes is back to make a timely tackle near his own corner flag. Portugal have played well here, but they have also worked impressively hard.
75 mins: Akaydin is struggling here with what looks like a back muscle injury. He has to be helped from the pitch as Merih Demiral comes on to replace him.
73 mins: Neto tries to pull back a low cross for Ronaldo but Akaydin defends his six-yard box well. He now needs some treatment, apparently for his hip. It’s been a demanding game for the centre-back.
STAT: Cristiano Ronaldo now has the most assists on record of any player in European Championship history. That selfless pass to Fernandes was the seventh time he has set up a goal in the finals.
7 – As well as being the highest goalscorer in UEFA European Championship history, Cristiano Ronaldo now also has the most assists (7) on record (since 1968) in the competition. Inevitable. #TURPOR #EURO2024 pic.twitter.com/vu5JJxqhEU

70 mins: Turkey fans were calling for Arda Guler shortly before Portugal’s third goal. He’s finally entered the fray. It’ll be quite something if he can inspire his side to a comeback…
68 mins: There’s a break in play as a pitch invader — apparently a child — sprints onto the pitch, takes a selfie with Ronaldo, and somehow manages to evade security before climbing back into the stands on the other side. He’s now being led away by stewards after being given a huge cheer from the crowd.
66 mins: Ronaldo! Silva dinks over a cross and the forward, surprisingly, mistimes his jump and gets his header all wrong. His wait for a goal goes on.
65 mins: Turkey are still working hard on the ball, but they’re just not creating enough to threaten Costa’s goal. Any hope of a comeback was diminished by that latest error leading to the third goal.
60 mins: Turkey’s latest attack yields a corner, but Ronaldo wins a free-kick while defending his own box. This has been a very good ‘team-first’ performance from him.
55 mins: GOAL! FERNANDES MAKES IT 3-0! It’s another terrible moment for the Turkish defence, Bardakci failing to cut out a lofted throughball, and Ronaldo is through on goal, having been played onside by Celik. Unselfishly, the captain squares the ball to Fernandes for a simple tap-in.

53 mins: After a spell of Portugal pressure, Turkey get forward for the first time in this half and Yazici attempts a dipping shot that bounces in front of Costa. The keeper holds on.
Kickoff: Second half
Portugal make two changes at the break: Ruben Neves and Pedro Neto for Joao Palhinha and Rafa Leao, who are both on yellow cards. Turkey bring on Yusuf Yazici for Orkun Kokcu.
Halftime: Turkey 0-2 Portugal
After just one minute of added time, the whistle is blown, and it’s greeted by a cacophony of boos. Turkey and their fans feel hard done by with some of the officiating, and you can understand that, but Portugal’s lead is a deserved one. They’re heading for the Round of 16 as group winners.
43 mins: Akaydin, who’s had an eventful game, gets booked for a sliding challenge on Leao. He won the ball cleanly but appears to have been penalised for leading with a high(ish) boot. Seems harsh, that one.
39 mins: Mendes and Leao combine well again down the left. The AC Milan winger goes down after a slide tackle from Akaydin… and gets a yellow card for simulation. That’s his second booking of the tournament — both for diving — and he’ll miss the final group game.
35 mins: Silva releases Fernandes with a brilliant pass, but the Manchester United captain’s shot is poor and flies high and wide. Moments later, Ronaldo tries to curl one towards the top-right corner, but he gets his angles wrong. Turkey are having to hang on here.
31 mins: Good save, Diogo Costa! The Portugal keeper sticks out a leg to deny Akturkoglu, who had done well to work space in the area.
29 mins: GOAL! IT’S AN EMBARRASSING OWN GOAL FROM AKAYDIN! Cancelo rides a couple of challenges but delays his pass to Ronaldo, who turns away in frustration. Just as you think the chance is gone, Akaydin passes back to Bayindir without looking, not realising his goalkeeper had come off his line for the ball. Bayindir and Celik desperately try to stop the ball crossing the whitewash, but they can’t. Portugal lead 2-0, and the Turkish fans inside Signal Iduna Park are stunned into silence.

24 mins: Portugal have taken complete control of the game now. Remarkably, that was the first goal Bernardo Silva has ever scored or assisted at the European Championship or World Cup. It’s put his team firmly on course for the Round of 16.
21 mins: GOAL! BERNARDO SILVA! Less than a minute after Pepe stopped that promising Turkey break, Portugal have the lead. Leao and Nuno Mendes combine down the left, the low cross is deflected by the foot of Kokcu, and the ball falls at the feet of Silva. Less than 10 yards from goal, he can’t miss, sidefooting home with power to prevent Bayindir making the save.

20 mins: Turkey work their way through the Portuguese press really well, but Pepe slides across to make a brilliant challenge and stop Orkun Cokcu running through on goal.
18 mins: Leao turns expertly away from Celik, but three players in white close him down to prevent the cross. Turkey are defending diligently here.
15 mins: Ronaldo drifts to the right, leaves Bardakci on the seat of his shorts with a couple of stepovers, and hangs a cross to the far post. Rafa Leao’s header loops towards Bayindir’s grateful grasp.
7 mins: What a chance for Turkey! A huge switch of play picks out Celik, who controls expertly and crosses towards the far post. Muhammed Akturkoglu gets in front of Joao Cancelo, but his contact with the ball isn’t clean, and he fails to hit the target. A huge opportunity goes begging.
4 mins: Lovely touch from Vitinha, who backheels the ball to Bruno Fernandes. He tries a left-foot shot from the edge of the box, which is bravely blocked by Abdulkerim Bardakci.
2 mins: The first shot of the match, you’ll be amazed to hear, comes from Ronaldo. Bernardo Silva swings over a deep cross from the left, and Ronaldo controls his volley to keep it low and on target, but he has to take the pace out of the ball, and Altay Bayindir makes a comfortable save.
Kickoff: First half
After a brief delay following the stadium countdown, we’re off and running.
5 mins before kickoff: The players are out, and here come the national anthems. This atmosphere is quite something. Hopefully, the game lives up to it.
20 mins before kickoff: Quite the greeting for Ronaldo and company as they came to warm up today. Turkey fans are in Dortmund in great numbers and made their feelings for their opponents clear.

40 mins before kickoff: In this group’s earlier game, Georgia and Czechia played out a 1-1 draw, Patrik Schick cancelling out a first-half penalty from Georges Mikautadze. The result means that Turkey and Portugal could guarantee top spot in this group if they win today’s match in Dortmund.
Team news
Cristiano Ronaldo does indeed start for Portugal, who seem to have switched to a 4-3-3 system. Diogo Dalot drops out, with Fulham’s Joao Palhinha coming into central midfield as Joao Cancelo moves to right-back.

Turkey start with Manchester United’s Altay Bayindir in goal. Arda Guler is not fit enough to start, so Yunus Akgun and Muhammed Akturkoglu line up in the wide attacking positions.
1 hour 40 mins before kickoff: Cristiano Ronaldo will hope to get on the scoresheet today after a largely ineffective performance on Matchday 1. Coach Roberto Martinez admitted in yesterday’s press conference that he still hadn’t decided his team for this game, so exactly who plays in support of the captain — or, indeed, if Ronaldo himself could be rested — remains to be seen.
