The past decade and a half represents something of a barren spell for Tiger Woods when it comes to competing for U.S. Open titles.
Woods, a 15-time major winner, has yet to strike gold in the third of American golf’s trifecta of crown jewels since triumphing past Rocco Mediate via playoff in 2008. He hasn’t been particularly close in the last decade or so, either. Woods has advanced into the weekend on one occasion since 2014, finishing tied for 21st in the 2019 iteration of the competition.
At this point in Woods’ career, the 48-year-old is most focused on making it under the cut line. His return to the event, hosted at Pinehurst in North Carolina, offers him another chance to showcase his dwindling skillset, even if only for fleeting moments.
Woods has some prior history with Pinehurst, having trotted onto the surface 19 years ago and raced to a second-place finish in the 2005 U.S. Open. Still, this is not the same landscape that greeted him all those years ago. Rather, it’s a mire — one that will become all the more challenging once Bermuda grass is placed on its outer reaches.
“This golf course is going to test every single aspect of your game, especially mentally, and just the mental discipline that it takes to play this particular golf course. It’s going to take a lot,” Woods said on Tuesday, per the Associated Press.
Woods will have his work cut out for him. All those who take the course on Thursday will.
Nevertheless, if Woods — arguably golf’s greatest talent — were to reach the latter stages of this year’s tournament, it would represent an incredible result, even if it doesn’t pay off in any silverware.

(All times Eastern)
Hole 14, Par 4
Shot 4: Woods taps in for par.
Shot 3: Woods falls just short of birdie, seeing his effort roll up right to the edge of the cup, but fail to go in. He’ll have to settle for par.
Shot 2: Woods makes his way to the putting green after a sumptuous effort on Shot No. 2.
Shot 1: Woods’ tee shot dribbles calmly across the grass once more. His five tee shots have all landed on the fairway thus far.
Hole 13, Par 4
Shot 4: Four momentum putts so far for Woods. All four have hit the target. He drops a lengthy putt with relative ease to make par once more. Really solid start for Woods.
Shot 2: Deep second shot for Woods. The ball lands on the edge of the putting tee. He’s got two shots to work with as he aims to maintain his positive record through four holes.
Hole 12, Par 4
Shot 4: What a recovery from Woods, who overcomes his spotty iron play on his second shot to put himself in position to save par. With the shadows draping across the green, Woods rattles home his effort to stay at -1 through three.
Shot 2: First mishit of the day for Woods. He drops his second shot off the hole into the bunker. He’ll have his work cut out for him if he wants to save face…and par.
Shot 1: Another tee strike lands on the fairway for Woods. Three up, three down.
Hole 11, Par 4
Shot 4: Woods’ second hole of the day ends in a par. Decent setup to put himself in position to save par. You need plays like that to get far in competitions like this.
Hole 10, Par 4
Shot 3: Strong start for Woods on Hole No. 10, as he sinks a putt from mid-range to nab a birdie. He is currently tied for the lead at this year’s U.S. Open (through one hole, of course).
