New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is expected to begin his injury rehab assignment early next week, marking the final step to overcome in his return.
Cole, who has been on the injured list since the start of the season, has been ramping up the rehab over the last few weeks with live bullpens both against players on the major league roster and those in Tampa.
Now, Cole is scheduled to begin his rehab assignment Tuesday with the Double-A Somerset Patriots, manager Aaron Boone told reporters Sunday.
Cole didn’t put an official timeline for his return, but he didn’t rule out the possibility of returning before the month of June ends.
The reigning Cy Young Award winner has been missed, but the Yankees starting rotation has been stellar in his absence.
The rotation has the best ERA (2.73) in the American League and the second-best in MLB behind only the Philadelphia Phillies (2.67) entering Sunday.
