And then there were eight.
UConn has dominated their way to this point, mowing down anyone in their path. The Huskies are allowing only 54 points per game in the big dance so far, with their average margin of victory being 28.7.
Illinois is a different beast, however, posing a real challenge to UConn’s hopes of cutting down the nets in back-to-back years. Illinois possess one of the best offenses in the country, led by star guard Terrence Shannon Jr., who is posting 28.3 points per game over his last three.
After knocking off No. 2 seed Iowa State, the No. 3 seeded Illini are, by default, the more battle-tested team. Their veteran roster and size advantage could have the makings of an upset brewing in Boston.
With a win over UConn, Illinois can reach their first Final Four since 2005 when former NBA star Deron Williams led the charge. It’s going to be a challenge, as Illinois is going into enemy territory against Goliath. Illinois might not be David, but UConn often makes their opponents feel like him.
One of these teams will be able to call themselves the winners of the east region Saturday night. Considering the quality of both squads, this might just be an appetizer before they cut down the nets Monday, April 8.
