A Sweet 16 matchup between the Duke Blue Devils and the Houston Cougars will take place late on Friday night on CBS from Dallas, Texas.
The Blue Devils, all things considered, have had a fairly easy road through the NCAA tournament thus far. As a No. 4 seed, the highest seed they’ve played against from the first two rounds was James Madison, a No. 12 seed.
They flew past Vermont and James Madison to make it to the Sweet 16. And they’re about to see a whole different level of basketball against the No. 1 seeded Houston Cougars.
Against James Madison, they posted 93 points. Jared McCain dropped 30 points, shooting 10-of-15 from the field and pouring in eight 3-pointers. Kyle Filipowski posted 14 points, too.
This is the Blue Devils’ third straight tournament bid under head coach Jon Scheyer. This is the furthest they’ve made it in the tournament in that span.
As for the Cougars, they remain alive, along with all the other No. 1 seeds in the tournament. They’ve defeated Longwood and Texas A&M in the first two rounds of the tournament to make the Sweet 16.
Against Texas A&M, the Cougars dropped 100 points. Emanuel Sharp posted 30 points, shooting 50% from the field and making seven 3-pointers. L.J. Cryer also posted 20 points.
It was an odd game for the Cougars, who allowed the Aggies to score 95 points to their 100. The Cougars owned the best defense in the country from the regular season, allowing just 57.5 points per game to their opponents.
Can they pull their defensive woes from the second round together to advance to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA tournament?
