Add Olympian to Jimmer Fredette’s already impressive basketball resume.
On March 26, USA Basketball announced Fredette will be one of four members of the 3×3 Men’s National Team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Joining Fredette are Canyon Barry, Kareem Maddox and Dylan Travis.

Fredette, 35, has not played in the NBA since the 2018-19 season. In 2022, he began playing 3×3 basketball with the ultimate goal of representing the United States at the Olympics.
Like he’s done so often throughout his career, Fredette called his shot when he first got involved with 3×3.
“Hopefully everyone will be prepared for the 2024 Olympics in Paris because that’s what I’m working for,” Fredette said in a 2022 interview with the Post-Star of Glen Falls, N.Y. “Have everyone thinking about that on their radar.”
In the time since, Fredette has starred for Team USA’s 3×3 program, winning gold at the 2022 FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup and the 2023 Pan American Games. And while the USA’s 3×3 team won silver at the 2023 FIBA 3×3 World Cup, Fredette earned an all-tournament team selection.
3×3 basketball officially became an Olympic sport at the Tokyo Games, where men’s and women’s 3×3 tournaments were held. Team USA took home the gold on the women’s side but it did not qualify on the men’s side.
Team USA qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games thanks to its top-three FIBA 3×3 World Ranking. With Team USA’s qualification, Fredette will be a member of the first-ever United States 3×3 Senior Men’s National Team.
In addition to men’s 3×3, USA Basketball will be represented in the women’s 3×3 tournament as well as men’s and women’s basketball.

What is 3×3 basketball?
Pronounced “three-ex-three” in English, 3×3 is a half-court variation of basketball. In addition to being 3-on-3 in the halfcourt, a few major rule differences exist in the world of 3×3:
Rule | 3×3 | FIBA Basketball |
Hoop | 1 | 2 |
Court | Half | Full |
Players | 3-a-side | 5-a-side |
Ball | 3×3 | Basketball |
Playing time | 10 minutes | 4 10-minute quarters |
Target score | 21 points | N/A |
Shot clock | 12 seconds | 24 seconds |
Field goals | 1 or 2 points | 2 or 3 points |
After scoring | No break | Inbound pass |
Tune into 3×3 and you’ll notice a different-sized basketball and a game consisting of one 10-minute quarter with a 12-second shot clock. Made shots count for one or two points and there is no break between made baskets.
Games can be played either indoors or outdoors.
