Lionel Messi’s career had already established the Argentine legend as one of the best football players to ever live.
Yet until December 2022, he had one trophy missing from his otherwise loaded cabinet — the greatest one of all, the FIFA World Cup.
No one had brought Argentina a World Cup title since Diego Maradona in 1986, and if Messi wished to be considered amongst those with a claim to the Greatest of All Time, he knew he had to win the most coveted title in all the sport.
That’s exactly what he did in Qatar 14 months ago. With Messi leading from the front, Argentina secured its third-ever World Cup title by beating France on penalty kicks in one of the most thrilling World Cup finals ever.
Now, Apple TV+ has brought Messi’s journey to World Cup triumph to life with Messi’s World Cup: The Rise of a Legend. The new four-part docuseries — which you can watch for free starting Wednesday, February 21 — provides fans an inside peek at not just his 2022 triumph, but further back in time through each of his previous World Cup journeys to frame just how memorable that final run was.
