Dalton Knecht looks to continue his torrid scoring stretch against a red-hot South Carolina team in Knoxville on Tuesday night.
Knecht, a Northern Colorado transfer, has quickly acclimated to Tennessee; the 6-foot-6 wing is the team’s leading scorer at 19.6 points per game. But Knecht has elevated to another level over his last five contests, averaging 32 points per game.
In Saturday’s win over Vanderbilt, Knecht dropped 32 points on 13-of-21 from the field, pacing the Volunteers as they erased a five-point halftime deficit to win handedly. Behind Knecht, Tennessee (15-4) has won 11 of its last 12 games, including a 5-1 start to SEC play.
The Gamecocks (17-3) enter play on a three-game winning streak. After an impressive 79-62 beatdown of then-No. 6 Kentucky on Tuesday, South Carolina kept its foot on the gas pedal, avoiding a letdown against Missouri on Saturday. They are now 5-2 in the SEC and just a half game behind Tennessee in the standings.
Guard Meechie Johnson is the team’s leading scorer, at 15.7 points per game. But Johnson was held scoreless on Saturday, going 0-for-9 from the field in a season-worse performance. Four other players scored in double figures, including Wofford transfer B.J. Mack, who scored 21.
The two teams will meet again on March 6 in Columbia, in the second-to-last regular season game of the season.
