Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, two of the challengers for the Champions League places, lock horns in what should be a gripping Premier League matchup on Sunday.
Both these sides have designs on finishing in the top four this season and, perhaps, laying down a title challenge alongside the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa. This match could well give some insight as to which team is best placed to do so.
After a superb first three months under new boss Ange Postecoglou, Spurs’ season has come off the rails of late. They fought to a creditable 3-3 draw away to champions Man City, but they have lost four times in a winless run stretching back to October 27.
Newcastle have also enjoyed some fine results despite a recent injury crisis, beating Chelsea 4-1 and Manchester United 1-0 at home, but their previous two away league games saw them lose 2-0 to Bournemouth and 3-0 to struggling Everton. It is difficult to predict what sort of performance they will produce here in North London.
The Sporting News will be following the Tottenham vs Newcastle match live, providing score updates, commentary, and highlights as they happen.

Tottenham vs Newcastle live updates, highlights, and commentary
25 mins: GOAL! Tottenham take a deserved lead! The ball is worked across the field to Son, who has too much space to take on Trippier. He gets to the byline and drills in a low cross, which is turned into the net by Destiny Udogie inside the six-yard box.
21 mins: At this point in the game, Spurs have made over 40 passes in the attacking third, while Newcastle have made four. Yet it’s the visitors who should be leading through that Isak chance.
17 mins: Off the line from Kieran Trippier! Cristian Romero’s header from a corner is looping towards the right-hand post, but Trippier hoofs the ball clear. That looked to be going in.
15 mins: Son leads a Spurs break but dithers on the ball as he squares up to Fabian Schar, allowing Miguel Almiron to get back and tackle. Son then concedes a free-kick for putting an arm across the winger’s neck as he tries to win the ball back.
9 mins: ISAK! WHAT A CHANCE! Newcastle beat the Spurs press and suddenly Anthony Gordon is running clear down the left. As he enters the box, it’s a three-on-two in the visitors favour, but his cut-back takes a nick off Ben Davies and Alexander Isak can’t turn the ball goalwards from point-blank range.

7 mins: GUIMARAES! Newcastle’s first attack sees the ball come back to the midfielder on the edge of the box. He deliberately cuts across the ball with his attempt, but it swerves just over the bar. It was nice technique, but he should really have hit the target.
6 mins: Son has started on the left of the Spurs attack, with Richarlison as the No. 9. It’s working well early on: their latest combination led to a Richarlison shot that deflected over the bar.
3 mins: It won’t surprise anyone that this has been a competitive and high-tempo start. Spurs are having the early possession but there’ve been no openings yet.
Kickoff
We’re underway in North London. Newcastle get us going in their change strip of dark blue and black.
30 mins prior to kickoff: Ange Postecoglou is happy to have players available to rotate into his side given Spurs’ injury list and the hectic December schedule.
“It’s good to have them back, for sure,” he told Sky Sports. “We needed to change it up anyway as it’s been a pretty hectic week.
“Sonny’s good. We’re looking forward to the game.”
Team news
The big news for Spurs is that Son Heung-min is fit to start despite suffering a problem with his back in the loss to West Ham this week. There are two changes to the lineup from that game: Pape Sarr and Richarlison are in for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso.
