Last week’s “Thursday Night Football” contest provided fans with something that they’ve been desperately waiting for: an enthralling football game. The Cowboys and Seahawks jostled back and forth for superiority, blotting the lush green canvas with bright streaks of gold and glitter en route to 76 combined points, 817 combined yards and — most impressively — zero punts.
That simply won’t do, at least not compared to the average “TNF” matchup spectators are served up. No worries, though. Amazon Prime has us covered, filling our beaks with another underwhelming matchup the likes of which we have seen all too often on the weekly program.
The Steelers host the Patriots in a battle of two sides with harrowing defenses and not much else. Pittsburgh (7-5) has enjoyed another solid season under Mike Tomlin, retaining its status as a defensive juggernaut while doing enough to remain competitive in a challenging AFC North.
But an ankle injury to Kenny Pickett means Mitch Trubisky is taking the reins of the offense on Thursday. That won’t inspire a lot of confidence among those hoping to be shrouded in offensive vigor.
NFL WEEK 14 PICKS: Straight up | Against the spread
Fortunately for Tomlin and Co., they’ll be greeted by an attack with even less incentive to score. New England (2-10) is in a race to the bottom, felled by putrid quarterback play. Whether it’s Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe, the Pats can’t seem to find the end zone. For all of its defensive solidity — New England possesses one of the best rearguards in all the land — if you can’t score, you can’t win. And the Patriots have shown little capability of finding the target in recent weeks.
It’s not the most appealing affair. But legions of onlookers will be glued to their seat regardless, either by way of having stakes in the matchup or in an effort to appease their masochistic desires.
So grab a chair, a mug of hazelnut caramel tea and perhaps a wool blanket as well. We’re going to be here a while. Might as well get comfortable.
