The U.S. women take the field for the first time in 2025 as they kick off the 2025 SheBelieves Cup with a game against Colombia on Thursday.
Ranked No. 1 in the world, the USWNT head into the new year with renewed faith in their global dominance thanks to an Olympic gold medal last summer that restored them to FIFA’s top spot.
Yet they are without some of their most notable stars who are readying themselves for the NWSL club season and thus have not been risked. It will, therefore, present a test for Emma Hayes to solidify the squad without the likes of Mallory Swanson, Sophia Smith, and Naomi Girma amongst world-renowned players.
Colombia, ranked 21st in the world, stand in their path to a sixth-straight SheBelieves Cup title for the United States on home soil, with games against Australia and Japan still to come in a return to the old round-robin format.

2 hours to kickoff: The U.S. women are without a number of their most notable superstars. Most of them are nursing slight injuries and were therefore protected as they embark on NWSL preseason, a notoriously risky time of year for serious injuries, especially for female footballers.
The one unexplained absence is that of Mallory Swanson, who has not joined up with the squad due to “personal reasons.” She has reportedly been absent from Chicago Red Stars preseason as well, which the club did not expand upon either, other than to say “club leadership… are fully supportive of her decision.”
It’s irresponsible to speculate why she’s been absent for both club and country, but the Red Stars said they are “ready to welcome her back with open arms whenever she is ready to return.” Hopefully, Swanson is okay, and she can return to the pitch soon.
The Chicago Stars FC announced their preseason roster today. One notable player yet to report for training camp is Mallory Swanson.

USA vs. Colombia lineups, team news
The USWNT is without a number of big-name stars. Attacking regulars Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, and Trinity Rodman are once again not with the squad, as Rodman and Smith recover from nagging injuries ahead of the NWSL season and Swanson is missing for personal reasons. Meanwhile, Naomi Girma and Rose Lavelle are also absent, with Emma Hayes preferring caution with the players in their club preseason.
The biggest question for Hayes to answer in this camp is where she sees Catarina Macario‘s best position. The Chelsea forward can play either on the right wing, up front as a central striker, or as a No. 10. With openings at all three positions this tournament, where Hayes plays her will go a long way towards indicating where she sees Macario long-term.
Another choice comes at goalkeeper, where Hayes must decide between Jane Campbell and Mandy McGlynn. Campbell has more experience, so the boss may give McGlynn her look here before deploying Campbell against the two higher-ranked opponents to come.
A reminder, too, that Lindsey Horan is now going by her married name Lindsey Heaps.

Colombia have left a number of regulars at home in favor of a few inexperienced youngsters. The absence of Brighton defender Jorelyn Carabali is notable, while midfielder Marcela Restrepo is also left out. Experienced forward Ingrid Vidal has also not been called in for nearly a year.
In their places are a number of young players, highlighted by Leicester City teenager Karla Torres in midfield. She is joined by 21-year-old Corinthians forward Gisela Robledo and Racing Louisville defender Angela Baron. Born in Texas, Baron spent one season collegiately at Arizona before going pro, first in Colombia with Atletico Nacional before signing with her current NWSL club a year ago.
None, however, have the clout of Utah Royals youngster Ana Maria Guzman, who owns six international caps at just 19 years old. On loan in the NWSL this season from German side Bayern Munich, Guzman can play in a number of positions and figures to be a regular for Colombia moving forward.
Colombia projected starting lineup (4-3-3): Tapia (GK) — C. Arias, D. Arias, Caracas, Guzman — L. Santos, M. Reyes, Montoya — Pavi, M. Ramirez, Usme
