Spain face Italy for the fifth European Championship in succession when the two giants of international football meet in Gelsenkirchen for a Euro 2024 Group B showdown.
The Azzurri prevailed on penalties when the pair faced off in the semifinal of Euro 2020, with Roberto Mancini’s team defeating England via the same means in the final.
Spain gained a measure of revenge with victories over Italy in the 2021 and 2023 Nations League Finals, going on to win the latter competition.
Italy were also victorious when the sides met in the Round of 16 at Euro 2016, although that checked back-to-back knockout losses to eventual champions Spain in 2008 and 2012.
Both teams started their Euro 2024 campaigns with victories. Spain swept aside Croatia 3-0, while Italy came from behind to defeat Albania 2-1 in a raucous contest in Dortmund.
The Sporting News is following Spain vs. Italy live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Spain vs. Italy live updates, highlights from Euro 2024
15 mins: Morata ahs a shot charged down but play stops because Di Lorenzo is down. With twisted blood maybe? Anyway, Donnarumma gets himself booked for dissent and we restart with a drop ball.
13 mins: Williams again to the overlapping Cucurella. The cross has too much on it for Lamine Yamal and Italy tear forward. Dimarco can’t find a man in the middle but handy for the Azzurri to show their threat.
10 mins: OH WILLIAMS HAS TO SCORE! Morata delivers a delicious right-footed cross having swapped positions with the left-winger. Williams heads wide. Morata probably would have scored.
5 mins: Williams all over this opening to the contest. Could be a long night for Di Lorenzo at right-back for Italy.
2 mins: Huge early chance for Spain! Williams gets to the byline, showcasing this team’s new found dynamism. Pedri meets the cross but he can’t get the header down and Donnarumma pushes over the bar.
Kickoff: 1st Half
Off we go. Italy boom it down in Cucurella’s direction and win a throw.
4 mins before kickoff: Here we are then. A belting pair of anthems. A proper game of football coming right up.
20 mins before kickoff: Italy’s Euro 2020 final foes England have just been in action, playing the team they beat to meet the Azzurri at Wembley three years ago. It wasn’t especially pretty…

50 mins before kickoff: Euro 2024 has not been short of matches to thrill supporters and Tuesday’s game in Group B might just have been the best of the lot. Croatia went behind early on against outsiders Albania — Italy know just how that feels — when Qazim Laci opened the scoring. The 2018 World Cup finalists battered away at the door after halftime, eventually finding rewards with Andrej Kramaric’s equaliser. Klaus Gjasula put through his own goal two minutes later but atoned for that misstep deep into stoppage time to snatch a point for Sylvinho’s side in unforgettable fashion.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: It’s not guaranteed that Morata will start tonight after limping out of the win against Croatia midway through the second half. Midfield lynchpin Rodri also left the action late on. Both would be huge losses but De la Fuente reassured fans over their conditions.
“Nothing important,” he said of their respective conditions at a pre-match press conference. “Morata got a bang, and Rodri was fatigued as he had worked a lot. It was intelligent to ask for the change, as we want all our players in the best condition possible for the final stages of this competition.”
1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: So, who fancies joining the Spain vs. Italy Euors hall of fame? Antonio Conte waging tactical and psychological warfare on Spain in 2016, while kicking every ball on a sodden Paris touchline. Cesc Fabregas’ moment catharsis from the penalty spot in 2008 that truly launched La Roja’s era of dominance, one that culminated in that sparkling 4-0 final win over the Azzurri in 2012. Spain haven’t stood on the top step of a major tournament podium since and perhaps this evening is another step in Alvaro Morata’s redemption arc.
The Atletico Madrid striker capped a torrid tournament by missing in the Euro 2020 semifinal shootout against Italy at Wembley. He is now his country’s captain, has enjoyed arguably the season of his career and opened the scoring against Croatia in an opening 3-0 win for Luis de la Fuente’s side.
