The Bills managed to avoid the fate of the Cowboys, beating the No. 7 seed Steelers on Monday to advance to the divisional round of the 2024 NFL playoffs.
That victory will set up a familiar Bills vs. Chiefs playoff contest, but this one will be a bit different than the duo’s previous clashes.
Why? Because it will be played in Buffalo rather than Kansas City.
The Chiefs have often been the top seed in the AFC during the Patrick Mahomes era. He and Andy Reid have created a dynamic combination and have posted a 74-22 regular-season record that few AFC teams have been able to match.
But this season, the Chiefs posted a record of 11-6. While that is identical to Buffalo’s mark for the season, the Bills beat Kansas City head-to-head. That gave them the advantage in the race for the No. 2 seed, and that has put Mahomes in an unfamiliar position.

For the first time in his career, Mahomes will be asked to win a road playoff game.
Has Patrick Mahomes played a road playoff game?
Patrick Mahomes has never played a road playoff game during his career. He has played away from home in each of his three Super Bowl appearances, but each of those is classified as neutral-site games (even though the Buccaneers technically played in their own stadium in Super Bowl 55).
Aside from those, however, all of Mahomes’ games have come within the friendly confines of Arrowhead Stadium. As such, his trip to Buffalo will provide him with one of his biggest-ever postseason tests.
Has Patrick Mahomes played in Buffalo?
Mahomes has played in Buffalo before. He led the Chiefs to a 26-17 victory over the Bills in Week 6 of the 2020 NFL season. He completed 22 of 27 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns in that contest while rushing for 36 yards on 10 carries.
Though Mahomes is 1-0 in Buffalo, it’s worth noting that his victory came in an empty stadium amid the NFL’s strict attendance policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. So, he will be battling both Buffalo and the Bills Mafia in person for the first time in his career.

Patrick Mahomes playoff record
Mahomes has posted an impressive playoff record of 12-3 during his NFL career. He has twice gone 3-0 in a single postseason with each of those campaigns concluding with a Super Bowl victory.
For more context about just how good Mahomes’ postseason record is, legendary Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was 13-2 in his first 15 postseason starts, winning three Super Bowls across five postseasons. Mahomes has achieved similar success, though he came up short of winning three championships thanks to Brady’s Buccaneers.
Patrick Mahomes home playoff record
Impressively, Mahomes has posted a mark of 10-2 in postseason games played at Arrowhead Stadium. He is 2-1 in neutral-site games with Super Bowl 55 being his only loss.
That said, Super Bowl 55 was the closest he ever had to a true road game during his NFL career. And even that game had limited attendance because of capacity limits put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
So, Mahomes’ game against the Bills will provide a unique test for the two-time MVP. Only time will tell whether he will be up to it.
